Electric Italian Supercar Claims World Record Quarter-Mile Time

There’s a new hot electric Italian supercar—okay, maybe Italo-Croatian is more accurate—and it isn’t from Ferrari, Maserati, or Lamborghini. It’s the 2023 Pininfarina Battista, the new carbon fiber electric sports car from the automotive arm of the famous design house. Earlier this month, the company appointed new CEO Paolo Dellacha, and now it appears he’s taken no time in setting some fast new acceleration records with his company’s fancy new supercar.

Pininfarina went to India to set a new quarter-mile and half-mile acceleration time record, we’re guessing to raise its profile in that country. It involved Autocar India as something of an official observer, with Hormazd Sorabjee setting a top speed of 358.03 km/h, or about 223 mph, which is a record in India.

Autocar India‘s Renuka Kirpalani clocked 357.10 km/h, or about 222 mph, to become India’s fastest woman in a road car ever. But those are local Indian records; the Battista is claiming some world records this week, as well.

Wearing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires to help its launch and to keep the car solidly grounded on the planet as it reached take-off speeds, the Battista was piloted by Development Driver Stefano Costa to a new claimed world record quarter-mile acceleration time of 8.55 seconds, according to VBOX data. The Battista also set a new half-mile acceleration record of 13.38 seconds. The speed records were validated by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the Indian sporting body affiliated with the FIA. Video of the record attempts is embedded above.

The new quoted record times beat the previous record holder, the Rimac Nevera, which is interesting, considering both electric supercars share much of the same gear. The Rimac previously recorded a quarter mile time of 8.582 seconds. It should be noted that, at that small a difference, something like the wind could be enough of a factor between which car takes the record on any given day, so it’s almost too close to count. The Nevara was tested at Famoso Raceway in McFarland, California, while the Pininfarina was at an NATRAX facility in India. As the most authoritative independent vehicle testing operation in the world, it goes without saying that we look forward to strapping our gear to the Battista in the near future to see if we can better Pininfarina’s times.

Pininfarina previously quoted a quarter mile time of at least 9.1 seconds for the Battista, with the car claimed to achieve 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 mph in 4.3 seconds, and 0-186 mph in 11.8 seconds, plus a top speed of 218 mph. It features a quad-motor all-electric powertrain good for 1,874 horsepower and 1,696 lb-ft of torque and a carbon fiber body, with a price tag around $2.2 million.
