First Images of Alfa Romeo C43: Goal for 2023 F1 Season is to ‘Aim Higher’

  • The C43, designed by Jan Monchaux, will make its on-track debut during a shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya later this week.
  • Alfa Romeo finished sixth in last year’s F1 Constructors’ Championship—its highest result since 2013.
  • Sauber is already setting the wheels in motion for 2026, when it will forge a strategic alliance with Audi.

Alfa Romeo revealed its Sauber-produced C43 during a launch ceremony in Switzerland early Tuesday.

Alfa Romeo finished sixth in last year’s championship—its highest result since 2013 – and has forged a new title partnership with Stake. The team will once again field Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu as its driver pairing while last year’s Formula 2 runner-up Théo Pourchaire will be its reserve.

It will be the final year of Alfa Romeo’s involvement in the Sauber-run squad with the partnership, which is only a branding and commercial exercise, due to conclude at the end of 2023. Sauber is already setting the wheels in motion for 2026, when it will forge a strategic alliance with Audi, which will enter Formula 1 for the first time as a power unit constructor.

Ferrari will remain as Sauber’s power unit supplier for the next three seasons.

Andreas Seidl has joined from McLaren as its new CEO, with Alessandro Alunni Bravi taking on the role of team representative, having been part of the company since 2017.

The C43, designed by Jan Monchaux, will make its on-track debut during a shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya later this week.

“I don’t want to fix a target for 2023,” said Alfa Romeo team representative Alunni Bravi. “It’s difficult, ahead of the season, as we don’t know where our competitors will stand. Of course, our target is to continue our growth—developing the team in all areas—and we know we have hard work ahead of us.

Monchaux added the main areas Alfa Romeo has striven to address with its C43.

“It was relatively clear for us in that we identified areas where there was still potential to unleash, which we wouldn’t do in 2022,” he said. “We concentrated mainly on the rear part of the car, where we wanted to be brave enough to do the next step in terms of pure development, which opened the door to other solutions we couldn’t implement last year.

“We had reliability issues last year, so there’s also a lot of things internally we changed in terms of processes to address that topic, as historically we were strong with reliability but somehow last year we lost that.”

Bottas, who joined Alfa Romeo from Mercedes in 2022, believes the outfit now “needs to aim higher—that’s natural, we want to finish higher than last year.”

Alfa Romeo hopes to improve upon its 2022 sixth-place finish in the F1 Constructors’ Championship.

“We started some solid progress together, and now it needs to be one direction, which is up—that includes myself, and the whole team, we need to do better and better.”

Zhou was able to return to his native Shanghai during the off-season for the first time since mid-2020 and was buoyed by the reset.

“It’s quite simple that I want to achieve more points finishes for the team and for myself,” said Zhou.

“P8 was my best finish in F1 so this year a top six would be amazing, and having more Q3 attempts. I think we have the package and the car to do so: less mistakes, more consistency, that’ll definitely pay off.”
