A real-scale analysis by BoredPanda shows the continent of Australia is nearly the size of the United States, and the Netherlands and Belgium could both fit inside Virginia. The sheer mass of the U.S. means someone driving in Florida will have a wildly different driving experience than someone in Washington State. In some rural areas, residents can drive for miles without meeting another vehicle while urban areas such as LA have bumper-to-bumper traffic most days. Naturally, the number of at-fault auto accidents varies across all 50 states.
AutoInsurance.com reviewed 724,398 auto insurance inquiries from customers in 2021 and combined it with national arrest and population data from the U.S. Census Bureau and FBI to uncover the states where drivers were more likely to be in an at-fault car crash within the previous five years. The analysis found:
- People living in Michigan and Hawaii were 50% less likely to get in a car accident than the rest of the country.
- Residents of South Carolina, Ohio and Massachusetts were 33% more likely to be in an at-fault crash.
- 12% of drivers in the U.S. (about 27 million people) had been in an at-fault car accident in a five-year period.
- Wyoming, Minnesota, Nevada and Idaho had the highest DUI rates (4%), twice the national average.
- About 6.9 million drivers were issued two or more citations in the past five years.
- Rural areas had 43% more DUI arrests than suburban neighborhoods and 34% more than urban areas.
