Mercedes Runs 2024 AMG GT Coupe at Goodwood, Immediately Spins Into Grass

First up, the crash, which wasn’t such a big deal. After its run—where it successfully slid through some corners—the camouflaged AMG GT prototype attempted to please the crowds with a few donuts, successfully accomplishing a couple of rotations before pinning it into a short grassy hill and hay bale. The driver—it’s unclear who was in the pilot’s seat at the moment of the incident—quickly backs up and retreats to the rest of the vehicle lineup, with a lot of movement in the lower fascia panels of the vehicle during the maneuver, which could suggest some minor damage was inflicted. We may never know for sure.

As for the car itself, we can extrapolate a bit about the upcoming production version of the 2024 GT based on the Goodwood prototype, which was no stranger during the event, revealing a bit of its interior along with the fresh (covered-up) exterior design. Up front we see a much larger new grille design adopted from the current model’s Track Series look, though the greenhouse, roofline, and rear-end all seem to largely carry over, if only slightly tweaked from the current coupe. Inside, it appears much of the new Mercedes-Benz SL’s interior carries over to the AMG GT, with a new tablet screen on the dashboard.

The future AMG GT and SL share a platform. The quad exhaust on this car could suggest this prototype is the AMG 63 version or its future equivalent. Our man on the ground at Goodwood and the plethora of available videos seem to indicate a V-8 powerplant will continue on in the model, and though it could get some form of hybridization, there’s no clear charging ports seen on this prototype. Considering its due to be a 2024 model, we should learn a lot more about the new AMG GT coupe in short order later this summer.
